I'm not going to start writing the essay in earnest until Monday, so that I can have the weekend to do things such as stop ignoring my family and maybe clean house. The place needs vacuuming like you wouldn't believe. And I think I'm going to rent the Kingdom of Heaven DVD and see what Ridley Scott's done to it since the theatre release.

There's also a Colin Farrell weekend on TV, perfectly, now that I actually have time to watch anything. Tigerland was a brilliant, brilliant movie. Not a lot of people know this, I suppose, but despite my starkly pacifist positions when it comes to the real world, I have very much of a thing for fictional war depictions. Oh, I whined when we were forced to read our national classic, The Unknown Soldier, in high school, but a few pages in I found that I really liked the genre. It's rather homoerotic, the history of war and the warrior, from Spartan bootcamps on...

...to Heinlein's Starship Troopers, which I confess once more, I have a pathetic affection for.

You'd think there was dissonance between violent fetishes and a thoroughly non-romantic view of real violence, but I see it as an emptying of animal impulses through and into fantasy.

Speaking of which, Barty Crouch Jr. was really pretty in the Mors Mordre clip. I predict new-born success for the fandom's previously rather ignored villain.
