Okay, so far that's "just cheer up" for the clinically depressed, "just try it" for food allergies, "hey, wake up" for chronic fatigue, "why don't you just quit" for addictions, and "you really should calm down" for a panic attack. We could stock a whole pharmacy with platitudes instead of all those expensive drugs. All-purpose "snap out of it" could be sold over the counter. -- ceruleanst

Public Service Translation [02 Mar 2005|09:49pm]
The Lord's Prayer

Say to Aaron and his sons: thus you shall bless the people of Israel, you shall say to them,
Yahweh bless you and keep you:
Yahweh make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you:
Yahweh lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.

Numeri 6:23-26

And let the priests bless all the men of the lot of God, who wander irreproachably on all of his roads, and let them say:
Let him bless you with everything good and let him keep you from everything evil.
Let him shine your heart with the wisdom of life and let him be merciful to you through eternal wisdom.
Let him lift the face(s) of his grace upon you for everlasting peace.

(And let the levites curse all the men of the lot of Belial, and let them answer and let them say:
Be cursed for all the deeds of your guilty godlessness
Let God give you terror through the hands of all the avengers of vengeance
And let him encourage desolation to come after you through the hands of those who avenge according to deeds
Be cursed without mercy according to your dark deeds
Be cursed to the darkness of eternal fire
And may God not show you mercy when you cry to him for help)

The Manual of Disclipine II,1-8

The verbs are exactly the same in both of them, even though the latter half is missing from Numeri. And yes, Numeri speaks of Yahweh while MoD uses 'El'. And no, 'the darkness of eternal fire' isn't supposed to make sense.

It was written during what the writers thought of as the end times, ruled by Belial and the forces of darkness. /Geek out.
