Apart from the killing, the viking conquests were really kind of funny. Maybe it's because I've always liked to read history as a story, but this bit of it reads like a French farce, complete with the bumping into stuff and the upstairs not knowing what the downstairs is doing.

Department of backstory: I watched The Lion in Winter yesterday, which led me to a hunt for Richard the Lionheart and Philip Augustus erotica (and yes, it is amusing that Patrick Stewart has played both Henry II and Richard, damn it), which then led to a brushing up of French history from Charles Martel onward.

Also, someone should make a movie about Empress Irene.
