I was at my grandmother's today, and happened upon a cosmetics' advert (infert? infomert?), in the guise of an article:
The amount of adult anti-age products is increasing season by season. Deterrent smart agents are available already for people in their twenties, who are eager to begin the use of youthening creams. Collagens, antioxidants and other agents that affect the condition of the skin can be found from the care products. Some of them activate the skin's own production.
As the target is dream-skin, in aid of moisturizers and night creams come filters, neck products, eye countour creams, serums and fillers of expression lines. Protecting the skin from outward irritants, impurities in the air and electro-magnetic waves is important, and with smart products it can be done effectively.
One can also enjoy chocolate without eating it. Now chocolate and other delicacies from honey to white tea slip into cosmetics jars, from which we spread them on the face and the body.
Cleansing has become more important than before, because the skin is, perhaps more each year, at the mercy of pollution. Deep-cleansing or form-altering cleansing-gels, foams and milks are already in the selections of many lines. The boom of natural cosmetics is not yet ending. The same trend is continuing on the front of mineral cosmetics.
You, woman. Don't get older than twenty. Don't eat goodies. Don't ever have expressions. Beware of magnetic waves. Better yet, don't go outside at all. And do spend a shitload fuckwad of money on products that have probably been designed so you'll keep on using more money on them.
Which fucking part of this is natural?

We had no Winter this year. It's not even the end of February, and I'm sweating like a piglet just having got in. It's a lovely Spring day.
PS. I'll never grow too old for chocolate Easter eggs. There's such innocent excitement in unwrapping the tinfoil.

I just finished watching the four-hour mini-series on Doctor Zhivago, featuring Keira Knightley. I've also been following the fairly new Russian series on the same, enamoured by the quality they put in television productions these days. It's amazing how both, while keeping fairly true to the source material, have managed to interpret the characters very differently.
I prefer the Russian interpretation, and not just for the authenticity (I thought the UK production was very authentic, right down to the baby-picture of Lenin on the wall of the school). This is not a dig against Keira Knightley (she reminds me of a crush I had in ground school, and I've quite liked her ever since Bend It Like Beckham), but the UK production didn't really sell any of the relationships for me. Larissa/Victor was creepy non-con, Larissa/Antipov was hollow, and Larissa/Zhivago was too saccharine for my taste. I didn't really get why any of them were together.
On the Russian production, Larissa/Victor is hot. It's deranged hate-sex, and I buy it. Larissa/Antipov is very sweet. She starts out using him to save herself, but grows to truly love him. And Larissa/Zhivago is a grim anti-romance, the kind that happens when two people are thrown together by war. I buy that, too. The actress who plays Larissa has this way of smiling that totally sells the character to me, as someone who'd have sex with her mother's boyfriend and then shoot him, as someone who'd go onto a warzone to look for someone she didn't realize she loved and who'd stay to tend the wounded, believing he's dead. I don't know what about the UK version didn't. For some reason I didn't get their motivations half of the time, and I already knew the story when I set upon watching it.The make-up department had done a great job, though. That's probably the kind of detail I shouldn't be paying attention to.

The Dictionary of Deities and Demons in the Bible can be found on Google Books. It's a really shoddy scan, and as always, there are pages missing. But as it consists of encyclopedic entries, it's a minor bother. The articles have been written by top scholars, and while some of them do get a bit over-excited at times, it's still full of fascinating tid-bits.
Anyway, if you're curious about what I'm writing my thesis on, look up "Sea".

I just watched the second series of New Who in two days, as I got tired of the local Beeb using my tax money for harvesting shows off of American cable, rather than showing EBU solidarity. ( Spoilers to those that haven'tCollapse )

I've never really understood it when, upon someone's death, people say "But they were so young and talented". Until right now. Heath Ledger was the actor of his generation, one that I always expected to grow into playing amazing parts in great movies. There seemed to be so much potential in him that for the first time, I kind of do feel robbed by the death of a famous stranger.

Season 3 of Lost finished here last night. I know that many people have completely lost interest in the series by now, but I'm just starting to get into it. Meaning that yesterday was the first time I seriously considered seeking spoilers for what's going to happen. And, upon finding out that you're not even a full season ahead in the US, decided against it.
And I might as well confess: I ship Kate and Sawyer. Ship in the sense that I like the chemistry between them better than with Kate and Jack, realizing that the writers are pushing both. I like them better because Kate and Sawyer remind me of Rogue and Gambit, before they got all star-crossed and whiny. I like them because they're both deeply flawed characters, and that sort of romance interests me more than that of the hero and the damsel. And it's for the same reason that I like Jack as a hero; he's deeply, deeply disturbed. But as a romantic lead, that makes for DO NOT WANT.
Oh, right. I forgot about the deep allegorical philosophical musing-cakes. But honestly I watch it for these reasons, and in this specific order: Sayid, Sawyer, Jin, Sun, Desmond, Ana-Lucia and Mr Eko. They're hot. They're stranded on an island? I hadn't noticed.
